A state legislator is anticipating celebrating his first Easter Sunday as interim pastor of a metro-area church.
Sen. George Young, D-Oklahoma City, accepted a call to serve as interim leader at Greater Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 3721 Staton Dr. His first Sunday at the pulpit was March 21.
An ordained Baptist minister, Young retired from pastoral ministry shortly before successfully running for a seat in the Oklahoma Legislature in 2014.
The former longtime senior pastor of Holy Temple Baptist Church thought his days in pulpit ministry were over.
But he recently felt a divine tug to return to the pastorate. After 30 years in ministry I did not foresee myself going back in as a full-time pastor but I always thought that if there was an opportunity to do what they call supply preaching and a person needs someone, I always saw that as a possibility. So I didn t close the door on that for good, Young said.
