EMERGENCY railway works to stabilise a crumbling embankment are taking place on the main line through Essex. Network Rail says the works, taking place on the Great Eastern Main Line at Ingatestone, are progressing well and are set to be completed tomorrow. The embankment has become unstable causing a dip in the tracks on the line out of London Liverpool Street towards Norwich. The line from Norwich into London is still open and is being closely monitored, however, a reduced service is running on the main line and branch line services to Clacton, Braintree, Southend, Colchester Town and Harwich are also affected.

TRAIN travellers are being warned of disruption as weekend upgrade and renewal works get underway. Network Rail is warning works will be taking place on the main line to Liverpool Street to improve reliability for train services. The works will continue to replace the overhead line electrification system between Stratford and Maryland causing delays from Colchester to London Liverpool Street. These works will take place on weekends from Saturday January 16 to Sunday February 21. Track renewal and maintenance works will also take place between Colchester and Ipswich on January 9 and 10 and on February 13 to 14. Ellie Burrows, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia said: “We’re planning to do a lot of work early in the new year which means we have to close a large section of the main line for several weekends.

Weekend passengers heading to London by train from East Anglia in January and February can expect more bus substitutions as Network Rail completes work on its overhead lines.
Engineers will be replacing wires between Stratford and Maryland stations which will force the closure of the lines every weekend between January 16/17 and February 6/7. The lines will also be closed on Sundays February 14 and 21.
As well as the overhead line work, other maintenance works will be taking place along the route at the same time on several footbridge structures at Seven Kings, Goodmayes and Brentwood as well track maintenance at Ilford and Shenfield.
