There’s a new event in southern Illinois that promises an exciting way to end the Halloween season, especially for children. The first ever Great Southern Illinois Pumpkin Smash will take place on Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to noon at the SIU Farms Service Center. Aimee Lemrise, the director of sustainability at SIU, says that.
“The climate crisis is impacting all of us but unfortunately, it disproportionally affects the poorest countries and people,” said Aimee Lemrise, sustainability director.
In the tradition of Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s longstanding commitment to sustainability and being “green,” the university is planning a variety of special events this month in recognition of October as Campus Sustainability Month.
As talk of climate change and environmental problems and solutions linger, there is one main solution students here in the SIU community can actively take part in: composting. “There’s not a lot of awareness as to the compost on campus,” student Chaya Rice said. Rice is a junior who is currently working on a sustainability.
