Online comment threads decry religion as only useful before humans evolved and now our society has grown out of it. But has the world really moved on? Around the world, about 2.3 billion people will put their hands up to say they are Christian but that’s more nominal than anything, half of all Australians say they’re “Christian” but what does it mean?  If we asked how many people went to church last week globally, the number would be around 1.1 billion.

The speech has attracted enormous public interest, yet the Prime Minister’s Office has not posted it to the PM’s official site despite Morrison travelling to the venue on a taxpayer-funded flight. In the interests of transparency and helping readers make up their own mind, Crikey is publishing this transcription of the PM’s 23-minute address. A small disclaimer: the transcription, done by a Twitter poster, has not been checked against delivery.
