Several major fires fueled by 60mileperhour winds, and we have just learned tonight that the fires are now turned deadly. It is hard to grasp the true scope of this disaster, just look through the windshield of this car, surrounded by flames there on both sides of the road. Tonight. An entire city evacuated. The flames creeping towards a cabin. A surveillance camera capturing it all. And Tennessee State troopers guiding families away from their homes through the thick smoke and fallen trees. Attacking pitbull. Someone had cut the leash on her dog coming up the back way there. Reporter he tells me the incident started moments earlier. Another person came in to steal her generator. He got bit on the bicep and wrist. Reporter deputy bray responded to the dog bite call. Her body camera recorded everything. Hello . [ barking ] reporter suddenly the pitbull attacked. Better stay there, get back. [ growling ] shot my finger off. I just shot my finger. Reporter in trying to fend off the attack deputy bray shot the dog and part of her left ring finger. Gatlingburg, tennessee. Take a look. This is gatlingburg where thousands of evacuees are staying in shelters and more than 250 buildings so far burned. Reporter out of control wildfires force thousands to flee. Go, go, go. Reporter some have to drive through the flames to get to safety. Its crazy. Reporter more than a dozen fires threaten the Great Smoky Mountains of eastern tennessee. But instead of mountainside, people feel hot flames and smoke being pushed by strong winds. The power went out. So it was very dark. The smoke was so thick, we couldnt breathe. Our eyes were stinging. So we just grabbed a blanket and took off running. We just watched a building go down in flames to the right of us. And we pulled in front of another building but the firefighter got us. I thank him so much. Been stolen, what if anything has been stolen because they have not been able to locate the owner of this property, definitely concerned about that this morning. Theyve been out here for two hours trying to piece together what happened here. You can see a lot of denial to the storefront damage to the storefront. They dont have any Surveillance Video from the outside and it appears no witnesses here, so this is a very active, ongoing investigation. I just spoke with a deputy here on the scene, and he says major concern here is that if weapons were stolen from this store, not only is this a safety hazard for the general public but also these deputies who work the streets every day. Of course well continue to be out here throughout the morning gathering more evidence.
