Martin griffiths, welcome to hardtalk. Thank you very much. Thank you for having me. Now, you ve been in that seat on this programme before, but this is the first time that you re talking to us since you stepped down from your role as the un s humanitarian chief injune this year. You have greater liberty, essentially, now to tell us what you think about the situations that you ve seen. May we begin in sudan, which is just one of the crises that you ve dealt with in recent times? it s a civil war that in the last 18 months has put an extraordinary 25 million people in need of support and struggling to survive. You said recently that you thought sudan could be worse than ethiopia in the 1980s. What did you mean? well, sudan is the first place now where famine has been formally declared, as you know, the first place since 2017, because there s 25 million people in need, and we don t know precisely, because of the lack of access to these people, how much in need they are. But we cannot do it alone. We work start speaking. But we cannot do it alone. We work with start speaking. But we cannot i do it alone. We work with more than 400 partners in and across 100 countries, mapping biodiversity, helping identify areas for protection and tropical important plant areas. Advising on sustainable use of natural resources, supporting habitat restoration. And very importantly too, informing Nature Based Solutions to the challenges linked to Climate Change. And we thank the Uk Government and our supporters for helping us to carry out this work. Without support we cannot of course do it. So in ethiopia for example, which is one of the worlds main producers of coffee, millions of smallholders rely on coffee for income. But the production has been severely affected by Climate Change. Jeopardy. Israel bombs gaza days after a new government takes shape. What led to this latest flareup of violence. Welcome to the lead. Im pamela brown in for jake tapper, and we begin today with our world lead, and this historic highstakes summit president President Joe Biden and russian president vladimir putin. The summit lasted roughly three hours with both leaders describing it as constructive and positive. They said there were no threats or ultimatums, and putin called biden balanced, professional and experienced. I did what i came to do. The tone of the entire meetings, i guess it was a total of four hours, was what was was good, positive. There wasnt any any strident action taken. Where we disagreed, disagreed, stated where it was and where he disagreed it was stated but it was not done in a hyperbolic atmosphere. Translator the meeting was actually very efficient. It was substantive. It was specific. And it was aimed at achieving results. One of those results, axes from the u.
