Mizell Center in Palm Springs ends drive-thru lunch program, returns to walk-up access

An official reopening date for the center has not been set. However, some in-person activities are available on a limited basis. For example, in-person tai chi is being held outside on the patio with a limit of four in-person participants. Online and hybrid activities are also available.  What you need to know: Participants in the lunch program will be able to pick-up their meals at the dining room s side door facing Ramon Road. Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, estimates that one in six people will face hunger as a result of the pandemic. Given that, unsurprisingly, the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services has seen the number of individuals it serves almost double since the start of the coronavirus epidemic. A year after Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency to fight the viral outbreak, we check in with Blake Young, the nonprofit’s long time president and CEO, to learn how his organization has been navigating the challenges of Covid-19, how it’s expanding to meet a growing need, and what we can do to help (hint: it’s not by donating food).

Even early on, it became common knowledge that COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, was considered by healthcare experts to be especially dangerous to the older segments of the population. Recently, Gov. Gavin Newsom instituted a regional stay-at-home order based on intensive care unit capacity in December, but California first called upon seniors to remain in their homes last March.
