Rail operator Grand Central is to suspend all its services for the next two months following the new national lockdown in England.
The company said it will “hibernate” services on both its North East and West Riding routes from January 9, with a return to service currently planned for March 1. A Grand Central spokesman said: “It’s hugely disappointing for us to be starting 2021 by removing our trains from the communities they serve.
TRAIN travellers are being warned of disruption as weekend upgrade and renewal works get underway. Network Rail is warning works will be taking place on the main line to Liverpool Street to improve reliability for train services. The works will continue to replace the overhead line electrification system between Stratford and Maryland causing delays from Colchester to London Liverpool Street. These works will take place on weekends from Saturday January 16 to Sunday February 21. Track renewal and maintenance works will also take place between Colchester and Ipswich on January 9 and 10 and on February 13 to 14. Ellie Burrows, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia said: “We’re planning to do a lot of work early in the new year which means we have to close a large section of the main line for several weekends.

Greater Anglia s new fleet of trains has clocked up six million miles of service during their first year in action even if much of the time they have been running nearly empty.
The company has now taken delivery of all 58 of its new Swiss-built Intercity and regional trains and has also introduced the first six of its new Aventra suburban trains on lines in south Essex. The first of these is expected to enter passenger service on routes to Ipswich and Colchester early in 2021.

Network Rail is set to close or modify nine pedestrian crossings in Suffolk in a bid to speed up trains on the main line to London and improve safety.
After the crossings are shut trains will be able to travel across them faster - and will not have to sound warnings. That should eventually allow some timetables to be speeded up.
The news comes a week after Network Rail was told it could not close a further 13 pedestrian and bridleway crossings that it had hoped to shut as part of the programme to speed up rail travel.
