steve bannon has a line. he says this is trump s first re-election. it isn t really, but it kind of is. he wants the race to be all about him. democrat and republican polls show that the race is all about him. this is a referendum on donald trump. the outcome will tell us a lot about how the country feels about the first three years of his presidency. i think the larger question, not just trump, but trumpism. by that i mean obviously his conduct in office or his rhetoric, is that going to be sort of still accepted? but i also think it s important to think about there is a sense among a lot of folks in washington, especially, that somehow the rules of political gravity don t apply to this president. that somehow he has denied gravity for two and a half years now. if the democrats do take back the house, i think it is a reminder that, in fact, there are still some rules left in american politics, still some things that you can say that
to state that maybe the democrats win the house. not perscertain. i think among governors, republicans have a high, high watermark. 33. the most we have had in history is 34. so you have 34 republican governors up and 16 democrats. half the republican governors can t run again after the 26 who are up today. that s that just says to me you re probably going to lose some governor ships. the question is how many. the president has made this election as much about him as a chief executive can. oftentimes you see presidents doing the exact opposite. he s telling voters at rallies, this is about me. do you think republicans around the country want that? well, some do. some don t. and i think americans generally
joyously optimistic as the picture being painted right here. the reason they re nervous isn t just because of history. it is because it is hard to model the type of enthusiasm that donald trump engendered in 2016. it is hard to predict a counter level of enthusiasm. it is hard to model it. i think part of it is being gun shy. a lot of this is emotion now because people were burned in 2016. personally, i told everyone who listens to me, which is about three people, that hillary clinton was going to win and don t worry about it. i had to explain to them that she didn t. but i think some of it, a big piece of it, is democrats have purposefully tried to keep this thing suspensionful to make sure people don t stay home. there s something to that. the other point i would make is you referenced jeff zeleny s reporting that trump hated the
profits up, revenue down, and that is not unfriendly to business or republicans is now calling the spending bill the most fiscally irresponsible budget in the history of our country. so don t believe the hype. deficits and debt do matter, rules of gravity don t change because your party is in office. fantastic, john. i like when we insert reality back into our world. the question is how they answer what they re doing on the deficit now. part of the answer is the economic growth will be part of the solution. that s their hope, but that s the problem, corporate profits are up, but revenues are down. they have to open for more goose, and this has been continuing for months and months, but the next step will be blame the fed, cut social spending, those are tough politically as well as in terms
