AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The Amarillo High Lady Sandies soccer team will travel to unchartered territory on Friday, taking the pitch for their first Regional Final in program history. The Lady Sandies (17-1-2), with only one loss and two ties this season, are two wins away from the class 5A State Championship game, but they’ll have a tough task in the regional final against the Grapevine Mustangs (23-2-2).
The Lubbock-Cooper Pirates took down the Grapevine Mustangs 22-19, on Christmas Eve.
The Pirates struggled to get the ball moving in the first quarter. But on their third drive Quarterback Cooper Lafabre tossed a 23 yard strike to Mike Marcinkowski for the teams first score.
Mustangs would respond on the next drive with a 49 yard run to tie the game.
LCP came right back and scored to go ahead 14 to 7 with 7 minutes left in the second quarter. The drive was highlighted by a 44 yard scramble from quarterback Holt Gibson. Followed by an 18 yard touchdown run by Erhan Elkins.
Pirates defense took over for the rest of the half. They held the Mustangs to no points and pulled off an interception just before half to keep Grapevine from scoring.
