OXFORD â An investigation by the state produced criminal charges against a former Granville County sheriffâs deputy, whoâs now the second member of the office facing prosecution.
The former deputy, Chad Coffey, faces counts of obstruction of justice, three counts of conspiracy to deliver cocaine, two counts of embezzlement by a public officer and two counts of altering, destroying or stealing evidence of criminal conduct.
Court documents indicate that the charges stem mostly from Coffeyâs dealings with a series of confidential informants from 2012 to 2017. One of the obstruction-of-justice charges addresses his handling of a consent search in 2018.
Coffey is free on a $50,000 bond, and in November, Superior Court John Dunlow agreed to allow him to travel out of state for work purposes with a Texas-based remote-surveillance company.
