Earliest letter to Santa Claus found in 1896 Christmas edition of the Grantham Journal Published: 12:00, 24 December 2020 The earliest example of a long-standing Christmas tradition can be found in a copy of the Grantham Journal dating back to the 1800s. During research into a programme for BBC Radio 4 about letters to Santa written across the world, a story in the Grantham Journal published on Christmas Eve in 1896 has been revealed as the very first mention in this country of a letter written to Santa. Joanna Espin, the curator at The Postal Museum in London, was interviewed for the programme. Originally from Lincolnshire, she coincidentally lives in Grantham and has done for the last four years.

The letter was written by a girl in 1895 asking for a paint set. Her note to Father Christmas was reported in the Grantham Journal which told its readers that the trustful little correspondent received her box of paints . The report was found by Joanna Espin, curator of the Postal Museum in London.

I would like to thank all who laid wreaths and those who took part in the opening and closing of the Garden of Remembrance. Thanks also to those who took part at the cemetery where the service took place for the civilians who lost their lives during the bombing of Grantham. Grace Knightall.
