South Island sheep and beef farmer Tom Sturgess has imported the cattle feed compound “Mootral , used by dairy farmers in Europe to reduce methane emissions in ruminants. Trials are due to be held by meat processing and farming business ANZCO to assess its impact on cows in New Zealand. While farmers in New Zealand could legally use it now, it was sent to Christchurch-based meat processor ANZCO this week to assess the impact on cattle here. “To see if in New Zealand, under New Zealand conditions, we can get the same kind of benefit,” Sturgess said. ANZCO general manager Grant Bunting said it was the first time the business had trialled a supplement to reduce methane.
