　　1879年，在美国政府的批准下，理查德·普拉特创办了第一家针对印第安儿童的寄宿学校，他宣称，创办这所学校的目的是“杀死一个印第安人，拯救一个新人类”。 　　据路透社近日援引美国原住民相关机构的统计数据显示，美国至少曾出现过367所原住民寄宿学校。在过去的一百多年时间里，在这些寄宿学校死亡的原住民儿童数字可能高达40000人。另有数万原住民儿童在进入寄宿学校后就失去了与家人的联系。有学者指出，美国联邦政府不愿意公布有多少原住民儿童被送往这些寄宿学校，又有多少原住民儿童在寄宿学校生活期间死亡或失踪。 　　在美国原住民寄宿学校里面，美国原住民儿童除了生命安全得不到保障，他们还遭遇文化灭绝，被迫接受“外来者”的历史和文化。 　　 　　(编辑 王晓辉)
