Weather delays COVID-19 vaccine deliveries, cancels hundreds of Garfield County appointments

More than 1,500 COVID-19 second-dose vaccine appointments scheduled for Friday in Garfield County have been canceled and will be rescheduled, due to shipment delays caused by winter storms across the country. The delay means about 1,000 people previously scheduled to receive their second dose booster shot at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, and another 400 at Grand River Health in Rifle, will see their appointments delayed until next week. Valley View appointments are being rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 24, and Grand River and Mountain Family Health Center appointments are being rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 25. “Valley View apologizes to those affected by this change, but these are circumstances outside of the organization’s control,” Valley View Hospital Community Relations Officer Stacey Gavrell said in a Thursday morning news release explaining the situation.

Garfield County COVID-19 case numbers continue to decline

Chelsea Self / Post Independent The rate of new coronavirus disease cases in Garfield County continues to decline, following state and national trends of late, but there is some concern that the number of people seeking testing has also dropped off. As of Tuesday, the number of new COVID-19 cases per day over the past two weeks had dropped to less than nine. The latest seven-day total was 34 cases, and the county’s test positivity rate has dropped to 2.2%. Both of those measures, and a test-turnaround time of 1.8 days, puts Garfield County at Level Blue, or “cautious,” in terms of risk of disease spread.

Loyal customer stronghold benefits Rifle amid fluctuating COVID-19 restrictions

Never underestimate the power of delicious chicken wings, customer loyalty and economic ingenuity. Throughout the course of 2020, these unassuming antidotes helped the city of Rifle not necessarily avoid the economic influenza of COVID-19, but they certainly made things a bit easier for general retail, food services and bars and restaurants to sustain decent sales. Just two weeks after Gov. Jared Polis and the state of Colorado announced Garfield County’s drop to a less-restrictive level yellow COVID-19 dial metric, city leaders agreed it’s a step in the right direction. But looking at year-to-date sales tax collections, city coffers have seen slight dips despite the COVID-19 level.

Limited supply slows rollout of COVID vaccination in Garfield County

Garfield County’s healthcare network easily has the capacity to administer twice as many COVID-19 vaccinations than it has given so far, Garfield County Public Health Director Yvonne Long said Monday. The problem, she said, is that the county has only received about half the doses requested from the state of Colorado, which in turn relies on vaccine distribution at the federal level. “That continues to be a struggle and a challenge for all of us, at the state and federal level, which then comes down to the local level,” Long said during a vaccine update to county commissioners Monday morning.
