Grey-te choice as Pateman Saunters into Grand National Saunter Boy surging to victory at Pakenham. Picture: Racing Photos Comments
Spoiled for choice champion jumps jockey Steven Pateman will ride Saunter Boy in Sunday‘s $250,000 Grand National Hurdle (4200m) at Sandown Lakeside.
Joint record-holder Pateman, who won four on the bounce through 2011-14, is hoping to become the first jockey in history to win five Grand National Hurdles.
But recent wins aboard Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Saunter Boy‘s stablemates Wil John and Norway certainly complicated the decision.
Norway went from a Warrnambool maiden to winning the Brendan Drechsler Hurdle brilliantly at Pakenham, while the equally progressive Wil John remains undefeated in three starts over the fences.
Chris Johnson drives Sassenach to the line to claim victory at Awapuni.
Veteran jockey Chris Johnson established a new national record for race victories on Saturday at Awapuni when Sassenach provided him with win 2452 in New Zealand. The 56-year-old required one winner to surpass the previous mark set by David Walsh after drawing level at Invercargill last Saturday. In typical Johnson fashion he set the new benchmark in spectacular style with a ride befitting the occasion.

Chris Johnson after setting a new record for most wins by a jockey in New Zealand. Johnson dropped the Austin Brown-trained five-year-old mare to the rear of the field in the rating 65 2100m contest, saving every inch of ground throughout, before beginning to hunt for a gap between runners approaching the home turn.
