are looking at that episode of time this is before the fbi went in and searched the property. because on those tapes, ultimately, they were able to see boxes being moved. but the questions now are about the tapes themselves and it s just another leg of this investigation. and there is going to be grand jury activity, we know, tomorrow, where the two men, matthew calamari and his son matthew calamari jr. are expected to be testifying to the grand jury. the calamari s names have popped up on and off throughout the last couple of years. can you just remind our viewers about the role of the that s because lamar s play in the trump organization? yeah, these are two very senior people, very close to donald trump and his business empire. they are working out of new york. matthew calamari sr., he s an executive vice president, and the chief operating officer. he became a person of interest in that new york investigation around the trump organization and their business dealings. he is som
documents at mar-a-lago after the presidency and specifically after the just this department was seeking to get back all of those records that he may have had and that he did have until the fbi searched the premises. we also know that they are collecting emails, text notes photographs. katelyn polantz was able to confirm yesterday that molly michael and assistant to donald trump. she also provided notes showing what donald trump was doing who he was meeting with on a regular basis. so all of this put together is quite a significant move by the justice department and i keep hearing there is going to be ample grand jury activity in the coming weeks. and so that really is a case still to watch, even while all eyes are on new york, maybe even put for trump even potentially more threatening than the new york case that s unfolding right now, norm. how does the case in new york based on what we know at least so far compare in terms of severity, potentially to what the special counsel jack smi
facing him later from the georgia district attorney in fulton county, from the mar-a-lago documents and, of course, for january 6th. that could be a win and could rally the base around him. that said, while this in the short term may help trump secure the gop nomination, it s hard to see in any way that any indictment for any case is going to help trump or any candidate in a general election. already we know how much of the swing voters he hemorrhaged in 2020 that he lost from four years prior. this will add to that. that s where it s difficult to see. it may help him grab the nomination. seems unlikely to help him grab the white house. jonathan lemire, matthew dowd, ali vitali, appreciate it. we want to go back to new york. we ve been waiting to see when there could possibly be grand jury activity, but we have michael cohen s former legal adviser, robert costello, we re told is in that van arriving
court in washington, d.c. that is the court he s on. i don t believe we have any knowledge whether there s grand jury activity or the type of challenges before him. thank you so much. let s talk about this with former republican congressman adam kinzinger, and former u.s. attorney elly honig. you re familiar with this new york office. when you hear michael cohen suggest that he was asked about topics broader than the hush money scheme to keep stormy daniels quiet, what does that tell you? that the d.a. is trying to look at every angle here, as good prosecutors, good investigators should. i think the stormy daniels hush money payment remains the primary focus, but are there more charges or counts here? you want to give yourself more ways to win, more ways to get a conviction and you want to make sure you re accounting for criminality. so that s a smart move by the d.a., and it s not unexpected.
about the significance of the speculation that this may be a push to reach internal charging decisions this spring. while there s two things about that jonathan. number one, in so many of these investigations, before you get to the point of issuing a grand jury subpoenas, there s a lot of work that needs to go on. looking at all of the video, looking at all the text messages, look at it at all the recordings that they may have. that takes a lot of time, interviewing other witnesses outside of the grand jury. and then you see it this kind of flurry of grand jury activity, in any case. those are usually in the last steps of where an investigation is. i ve said all along, i think jack smith knows that the clock is ticking with regard to getting this in before we really get into the thick of the 2024 presidential election. he s not going to rush his turntable, but i think there will be, or they re well aware of it. and they want to make sure that they have all the is, cross all the t s,
