Few athletes had a regular season in 2020. Some were able to compete in a handful of international races, some stayed local and contested a few low-key meetings, while others took a complete break from competition.
In the first of our series in which we chat to medallists from the World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 to see what they did with the extra year leading into the Tokyo Olympics, we catch up with men’s 400m champion Steven Gardiner of The Bahamas.
How has life changed since winning world 400m gold in 2019?
Steven Gardiner: Well, for one, it has been great (to be world champion) and number two it is still an unbelievable feeling that I am a world champion. It has been good to have been able to share my experiences when people ask me questions like; ‘what does it feel like to be a world champion?’
have, as is required, no criminal history, which is something they can get here. so many people here have family in the united states who are, of course, taking people in. go back to the number of 70,000 homeless. talking about a country of 500,000 people. so if that number is accurate, and we have no reason to doubt it, we re talking about 17% in a couple days of the population that is now without their homes. and so many other people here are living in homes that are not suitable to be lived in here in freeport and in grand abaco. we re still without power. still without water. makes it very, very difficult living conditions to get gas can take all morning. to get food can take all morning. there s a black market for bread now, and every little item that you can we all take for granted. we worry about eating spoiled food because so many markets lost their generators. it is really tough conditions.
sufficient information to confirm any numbers at this time. and where are people able to how are people able to connect? what is the system for people to try to locate missing loved ones, whether they are in the bahamas themselves or in the states or anywhere in the world trying to locate their family members? we have two mechanisms in place and other support mechanisms but the main one is o social services. we have a desk primarily for that purpose and a web page, called dorian people search, where you will see names posted of persons that are already accounted for and if there s someone that you re looking for, you can add their names, and they will respond to you in a very quick manner. staying with you for one more moment, the bahamas is not an island, it s an archipelago of islands. it isn t all of the bahamas impacted. it s really just two major islands, grand bahama and abaco.
