Shimla, Jan 18: The first phase of Panchayati Raj Institution elections was held on Sunday in Himachal Pradesh. The elections are being conducted in three phases and the voting for the second and third phase will be carried out on January 19 and 21, respectively.
In the first phase, the voting in 1,227 gram panchayats was held from 8 am to 4 pm. The candidates are contesting the elections as independents and not on party symbols this time.
The electoral officer stated that as many as 7,583 polling parties ensured smooth conduct of voting in the first phase. The counting of votes for the ward members, deputy village heads and village heads will be conducted soon after completion of voting.

A mini-general election at the grassroots level was completed without major incidents in 14,234 Gram Panchayats across 34 of Maharashtra s 36 districts (except Mumbai and Mumbai Suburban districts), officials said on Friday.
Though the voting percentages were still being tabulated, Maharashtra State Election Commission officials said the response was overwhelming , especially from women and youth, though district-level tentative figures ranged from 50-60 per cent turnout.
The results of the elections - in which local issues intertwined with state concerns dominated - will be declared on Monday.

MANGALURU: BJP in Karnataka is all set to hold ‘Jan Sevak’ conventions to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Pradhan Sevak’ vision popular in villages across the state, from Monday to Wednesday.

BALLARI: Yuva Shakti Sena Samskritika Kreeda Hagoo Graminabhivruddhi Sangha, a youth association at Hire Hadagali in Huvin Hadagali taluk of Ballari district, has made it a point to take an undertaking from the contestants of gram panchayat election to address 37 problems dogging their village.
Sangha president Vinayaka Harapanahalli and secretary Siddesh K L M said that they thought of the idea going by their bad experiences from the past elections.
“Every time, they get elected by merely making promises. There is no mechanism available to check their performance. So we have prepared a list of 37 problems faced by the villagers. As the village elders were particular about development, we approached the 47 candidates contesting for 21 GP seats. They all signed on that, thereby taking an undertaking to solve those problems with some elders as guarantors and witnesses,” they said.
