Finding freedom from domestic violence seems impossible when many shelters are at capacity. That's why the organization The Family Place created an online portal to help shelters find available beds elsewhere.
After a local Graham Police Department Officer lost her home in a fire this week, the community has provided support for her and her family. The fire started Tuesday, Jan. 23 in one of the bedrooms at 912 Fairview St. in Graham. Emergency responders were dispatched and had contained the blaze and put it out within 30 to 40 minutes, according to GPD Chief Brent Bullock. The fire occurred at the home of GPD officer Jennifer Hudson, who has been with the department for two years. Her room in the house caught fire reportedly due to a lit candle in the room.
Following the giving season there are many in the community who still require assistance and the Graham Crisis Center provides for those in need. During this time of the season the organization itself also is looking to the community for support. The nonprofit organization is made up of The Food Pantry, Harry’s House women’s shelter, The Nifty Thrifty and the benevolence fund. Cooking from dusk to dawn the Young County Masonic Lodge slaved away on smokers last week to provide 164 turkeys, with 124 donated to those less fortunate in the community. The annual Christmas turkey program from the organization continued for its 13th year at the lodge located on Third Street in Graham. Donated smokers lined the back of the lodge which were loaned to the organization by various members of the community.
