of that country will only increase. the last u.s. planes carrying u.s. troops and state department left personnel left kabul airport at 3:29 p.m. eastern time. they cleared afghanistan airspace and that s when we heard from the general. it marks the end of 20-year mission which began shortly, of course, after the september 11th attacks. roughly 6,000 americans have been evacuated since august 14th. about 250 roughly are believed still to be on the ground in afghanistan with the taliban now in control. meantime, the big story here back at home in the u.s. rescuers are trying to reach people trapped by floodwaters across louisiana as residents are being told not to return to new orleans and other areas across the southeast. more than 1 million customers in louisiana and mississippi, including all of new orleans left without power after hurricane ida made landfall as a category 4 storm.
