SARATOGA SPRINGS Trainer Rob Atras interrupted himself while answering a media question in the winner’s circle on Saturday.
“She won again,” he said with a laugh, glancing at the replay and perhaps needing confirmation from the enormous video board in the Saratoga Race Course infield to make sure it really happened.
It really did.
Sent off as the longest shot on the toteboard, at 14-1, the Atras-trained Maracuja got up in the final two strides to catch the best 3-year-old filly in the country, Malathaat, and win the Grade I Coaching Club American Oaks by a head.

For us, anyway. Probably not for Malathaat, though.
For the first time since April 30, the talents of the best 3-year-old filly in North America will be on display on the racetrack again, as she is the 2-5 morning-line favorite against just three rivals in the Grade I Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday.
She’s so good that trainer Todd Pletcher and owner Shadwell Stable had considered running her against males in the Belmont Stakes on June 5, but skipped it and waited for Saratoga.

Saturday’s featured race is the Grade I Coaching Club American Oaks. Run over nine lengths on the main track, it features the smallest field of the meet to date, with only four horses entered. Of those four, all eyes will likely be on undefeated Malathaat (2-5).
The filly was last seen taking the Grade I Kentucky Oaks in April in what has been so far the best of her five career races. The distance suits her, and despite the time off since the Kentucky Oaks, her workouts suggest she is ready to go today. Layoffs do not tend to be a problem for thoroughbreds trained by Todd Pletcher, so one should expect her to continue her winning ways.
