SWFL police officers and deputies get crisis intervention training from NAMI Published: May 27, 2021 4:24 PM EDT Updated: May 27, 2021 6:32 PM EDT Recommended Officers and deputies in Southwest Florida are getting crisis intervention training in hopes that they can better de-escalate fraught situations. “Call to call a majority of them are people who are experiencing some sort of crisis,” said Cory Singleton, an officer with the Fort Myers Police Department. Singleton is one of 50 others going through crisis intervention training provided by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, also known as NAMI. The goal is to get more officers and deputies this kind of training. If an officer comes across someone with mental illness or having an episode then they can call one of these CIT- certified officers to help defuse the situation.

Preparation urged with arrival of storm season By TIFFANY REPECKI / trepecki@breezenewspapers.com - | May 25, 2021 With early predictions pointing to above-average activity for the upcoming hurricane season, officials are encouraging the islands to be prepared and have a plan in place as it only takes one storm. Hurricane season is recognized as June 1 through Nov. 30. Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project, which has been predicting the season’s Atlantic basin hurricane activity for over 35 years, is forecasting 17 named storms for 2021, with eight of those reaching hurricane-level strength. According to the April 8 predication three more will be released from June to August four of the storms are anticipated to become “major” hurricanes.
