The recent
coup in Myanmar deposed the country’s elected government by Aung San Suu Kyi’s National
League for Democracy (NLD) and military rule was established. Though it is
not for the first time this East Asian country has witnessed a coup at the
hands of its strong military, the present take over by the armed forces is a great
setback to the poor nation; the coup has been staged at a time when the country
under the charismatic leader MS Suu Kyi was inching towards stability following decades
of tension and instability.
