Here is how some of that played out last night live. They are celebrating symbolically that they have taken control of the Police Station. We know there are or were at least five Police Officers that i could see. They might have been the same ones on the roof as were in the back. We dont know where those Police Officers are, but the main entrance to the Police Station is now in flames. Theres no sign of police and there is more debris going on. Theres fire crackers being put off by the protesters in all directions. They lit fire crackers in the parking lot. You can see that. There is a Police Presence on top of the building. The earlier fire was over there, not even in the center of things. There is no chance. There are thousands of people on the street. I get your point, that to let a Police Station burn is symbolically an important matter for them to consider. There is no chance of fire trucks getting in here at this point without a very heavy intervention by if authorities or by the
Am going to need you here in the city and i need you for two or three days and i may need you longer than that and i cant tell you what im going to need you to do yet. But i know i need you. And they came. They began preparing readiness to be able to move folks from all over the state of minnesota, literally from miles and miles away to come to the metro area to be prepared to help us keep the peace. Over the course of the day, i met with my counterparts in minneapolis and st. Paul, chief arradondo, to talk about what missions they needed the state to help them fulfill. The department of Public Safety at that point was calling to say we are here to support you. We are your partners. Tell us what you need and we will backfill. We will fill in the gaps. Tell us what you need for resources and we will help you get. And we did get some very specific missions and in other cases we got no real mission at all. In the absence of a real mission, we began to identify where the critical needs wer
In minneapolis as the National Guard is called. In matt, good morning to you. Good morning, we are not far from that third precinct building that was evacuated and caught fire. We want to show you yet another fire happening in this area. What appears to be some type of business just engolfe engulfed n flames. There is not a lot of firefighters or authorities right now. Many of these neighborhoods, officers and fire crews are just allowing these type of facilities to burn bowers they are probably so preoccupied with some things that are going around. We have seen looters and rioters smash business windows. Absolutely empty stores. We have heard gunshots near and far. People have been lurking in the shadows with. Rioters we saw bursting into a u. S. Bank not far from here. Smashing into the windows. Trying to smash into the atm machine. So lots of lawlessness and chaos going on. Right now thick, black smoke in the air. The smell of smoke for really just miles and a short while ago, the p
Moment. A National Moment of pain, anger, and frustration. Protests happening around the country right now. This is a live look at the scene in minneapolis. It comes less than 24 hours after a series of demonstrations in at least 30 cities. Some were peaceful. Other protests did start that way but then turned violent, officers attacked, hundreds arrested. At one point, the cnn World Headquarters building in atlanta was damaged by protesters as our crews in the building continued to broadcast what was happening there and around the country. There are more demonstrations scheduled for today, a response to the story that has dominated the news for days now. I cant breathe. Please. I cant breathe. Get up and get in the car, man. I will. I cant move. Ive been waiting. The death of george floyd, the unarmed black man who lost his life after a Minneapolis Police officer held his knee on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. The criminal complaint says floyd was unresponsive for 2 minutes and
Not just in police hands but in forcible custody, broad daylight, on his stomach in the street on video with his neck under the knee of an officer. This is a new angle that has surfaced late today. And whats notable about it is the audio it contains. Its the number of Police Officers you see detaining him there in the street and the number of times you can hear mr. Floyd say he couldnt breathe. He died in police hands. That started what we are seeing tonight. Officials held a News Conference today including the trump appointed u. S. Attorney for the district of minnesota including the local attorney for Hennepin County, minnesota. But they didnt have enough to say to stop what were seeing unfold. Right before the top of the hour, i asked ally velshi to count up the the number of actively burning fires around him. His answer was four. We have the now famous third precinct, Minneapolis Police station on fire. We have what appears to be a familyowned smoke shop on fire. We had several lar
