there s no one else with you. the world s problems hadn t changed, your problems hadn t changed, but you felt you were better equipped to deal with them. it turns into a conversation. it s not a sort of debriefing. it is a conversation about issues. because the queen does her homework did her homework. she would read her red boxes, she would read government papers, she would know what was going on. and, of course, she had tremendous experience of issues and of people. did she ever lead you to change your mind wittingly or unwittingly? well, i can t reveal any particular conversations, but i think the great thing is, yes, that, coming from a slightly different angle, from a slightly different perspective can make you think. i haven t sort of looked at that quite as closely as maybe i need to. and what s the best advice she ever gave you? well, everything you say to her and everything she says to you is obviously private.
was the absolutely pivotal audience with the queen for every single one of her 15 prime ministers. that meeting once a week where mnemonic met the prime minister, whoever it was, churchill, liz truss her last prime ministerjust in the last couple of days, through that extraordinary sweep of history. the prime minister after prime minister we know that that encounter was vital. the queen wouldn t tell them what to do but her role was to provide discrete advice. perhaps one of the only meetings that week where they could be completely sure they were speaking in confidence, that its contents would never emerge into the public domain and her role was sometimes seen as perhaps to encourage or gently worn. the queen probably had a better institutional memory of how government works, somebody who was genuinely engaged, spending hours every week going through the red boxes reading government papers. the prime
there were massive tours at the beginning. but france is an air transport member when she opened sydney opera house, in 1973, i think it was, she could practically go for a weekend. things got a bit better, i think, as she got older. i and just one final thought here and i know you are staying with us this morning. yes she had such access, as you talked about. do you get the impression that she just loved her job? i think she did, i think she liked being queen. one of the things she was extremely good at is the paperwork. she once said i think she told j.k. rowley, the author, that she could skim read, which made life aloft lot easier. she never hung on to documents. he could quickly go through her boxes of government papers. and don t forget, she didn t just get papers from this government, but the other 14 countries that she was head of state, she saw those.
