The day-to-day rise in fresh coronavirus infections in the city has led to beds filling up fast in major government hospitals in the city. In fact, a significant number of patients required oxygen support.
At the Government Medical College Hospital, Omandurar Estate, one of the earliest exclusive COVID-19 facilities in the city, 521 beds of the total 575 have been occupied. Of this, 337 patients were COVID-19 positive, while the remaining were patients with suspected symptoms of COVID-19.
“The cases are on the rise and the admissions are proportionate to it. Around two-third of the patients required oxygen. We are admitting persons who have comorbidities and those with significant lung involvement. We are seeing more young persons with lung involvement. We are also seeing sudden deterioration in patients, including the young,” R. Jayanthi, Dean of the hospital, said.
4,276 persons contract COVID-19 while 19 succumb to the infection; 86,179 persons vaccinated
After more than five months, the number of people testing positive for COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu crossed the 4,000-mark on Thursday. A total of 4,276 people contracted the infection and 19 persons succumbed to it.
The State last recorded over 4,000 cases a day on October 17 (4,295 cases). The fresh cases have pushed Tamil Nadu’s tally to 9,15,386, and its active caseload has touched 30,131. Of these, Chennai accounts for 11,633 people who are still under treatment.
Chennai’s daily count exceeded 1,500 on Thursday, with 1,520 more people testing positive for the infection. The city’s overall tally touched 2,59,320. In Coimbatore, 427 people tested positive, followed by 398 in Chengalpattu. Eight districts recorded over 100 cases each Tiruvallur (199), Tiruppur (154), Tiruchi (131), Thanjavur (125), Nagapattinam (118), Madurai (115), Kancheepuram (107) and Salem (103).

Urging people not to believe rumours on a total lockdown after polling for Assembly election on April 6, Health Secretary J. Radhakrishnan on Monday said restrictions will certainly be tightened in COVID-19 containment areas.
“Some steps should be taken without affecting the public and with public cooperation to avoid an out-of-control situation like Maharashtra. Of the 4.5 lakh areas, there are 925 containment areas that had more than three COVID-19 positive cases. Restrictions will be tightened in these areas. We will have focus volunteers and take up complete testing,” he told reporters shortly after an inspection at the State Vaccine Store.

We will have focus volunteers and take up testing,” he told reporters shortly after an inspection at the State Vaccine Store.
