Employed, unemployed, out of the labor force. And does construction really look that different from the rest of the economy. And i could ask this question by looking at people who lost jobs in the Construction Industry and looking at people who lost jobs that were labeled in the construction and maintenance occupation. And these are whats called long tenured displaced workers. These are workers who had held their job for at least three years before losing the job. we look at grownups who have people long-term unemployed when they re growing up and they have lower wages today, decades later so we know it s a serious problem. what i called for in a recent congressional testimony is that we recognize that it s a serious problem and then start to think about what are we going to do about this to learn what might help because right now we re not doing anything. we re not helping and we re not learning and so what i propose in the testimony and this is where the government jobs program, the other proposals come out is that we think of maybe 10 or 15 ideas that might work and do some random trials all around the country to see if they do work and then start to invest in the programs that actually work and so maybe the people on the left would think a government job might be the solution or the people on the right might think let s have a private employer do it. let them both design a trial and evaluate it scientifically and invest in the one that work.
the countries that did austerity are growing slower than the united states. the bottom line, we spent a trillion dollars which a third was tax cuts, we wasted a lot of that money doing tax cutting. we should have spent the whole trillion. the bottom line, we have a spending driven economy. when you have consumeser withdraw spending partly out of terror, they re losing value on their homes, banks withdrawing lending. you sucked all of that money and spending out of the economy, someone has to replace it. we ve always had the government step in and replace that spending. we did it with fdr, even george w. bush did it. he hired a lot of government workers during the recession. post 9/11 we don t think of the tsa as a government jobs program, that s what it is. when i was in the bush administration, we didn t have four years of $1 trillion deficits. no. you created them. you made them. no, we did not. it was not a spending caused deficit. it was a war caused and tax cut caused
