And so we continue to move to make progress, but we have a lot of Unfinished Business. We have a lot of Unfinished Business in the area of Economic Justice as well. And it starts with the minimum wage. Nobody who works a fulltime job in this country should have to live in poverty. [applause] and what we see all too frequently are people working hard and falling further behind, people who have to make choices between do i pay the mortgage, do i pay the rent, or do i pay for my daughters medicine . Those are choices that we should never have to make here in america. I applaud the san diego city council, i applaud other local councils who are tackling this issue. Thirteen states in the last year have raised the minimum wage. Business openers across Business Owners across this country tell me, tom, this is a consumptiondeprived economy, and the way to get more customers is to put more money in their pockets. Thats why we need to raise the minimum wage. And if we want to expand opportunity
And because of that doing well and then i did not know how to give in or apply got a letter saying i had a scholarship because a Wonderful Group of women had given me a scholarship. Host how did you get connected with them . Guest i can remember. They probably heard about me through highschool someone said she can make it. Event then it was easy for me to excel and keep going then went on for graduate degrees. I went on to college but then i have come back and helped my own own people, the people who are my people, working class people so i feel like yeah i have had to give up somewhat who i was but now i can come back and i can help the people who are like me. But so were you treated with suspicion back home being the first to go to college . Is at the wrong word . Guest i think its a very prospective perspective word. Is a huge thing in their favor, but they have not gone the way of their moms. They said to themselves, we want Something Better for our lives and we dont want to go there and they didnt. Host Deborah Hicks where do you think you were successful and where do you think you would do things differently . Guest i think we were very successful. We had an intimacy. We had a super successful class. We had seven girls who are attaching themselves to school, loving literature and loving books, loving a school like experience in the teacher. I think the biggest challenge i faced was just about the time that my class finished i had to leave to come back to my home state and found my nonprofit that i was thinking about founding. The biggest difficulty was not being able to kind of finish the class when the girls were entering adolescence. Thats why when i found my new i made sure we were serving girls on the middle school years. We are trying to work with students, girls in the years when they are
Greece and the euro zones other finance ministers. The new greek government has said time and again that it will not accept any continuation of the indebted nations bailout terms. The proposal put forth was for athens to agree to extending its bailout by half a year and successfully conclude it. The greeks called the proposal irrational and unacceptable. The government was elected on promises to radically change the deal. Gail in brussels for us. No deal again. Are we getting closer or further away from an agreement . That is a really good question. I just came back from the european council. A very strange atmosphere, dare i say. Its a great greek government is still playing poker, they are running the risk that they will be alone at this table, so lets use the official phrasing of slightly disappointed. That is why we now have a situation where there is a take it or leave it offer on the table with literally, as the dutch finance minister put it, no alternatives. He said that now the
