half million refugees fleeing ukraine. that is the number. one and a half million refugees. the largest displacement of european since world war ii. for more on this, we re joined by nbc correspondent live in the western city of lviv. and in the border crossing in poland. what do we know about the state of the salt on ukraine? what s the latest? chris, i think the big news this morning is the humanitarian corridor and the possible cease-fire. , yesterday when we spoke at exactly this hour we had possible good news that the russian assault on cities like mariupol was going to pause this morning. well, about an hour after we spoke that was shattered. once again, hopeful this morning that families are waking up and hoping that they can get on government buses. they are going to get on and hit rides with friends, get any
broken by the russians. reporter: hey, that s right, the cities of mariupol and volnovaha, were thinking this was the day they would get out and flee farther west to more safety. this morning from the kremlin and the adviser of president zelenskyy, we heard that there would be a cease fire until this afternoon, until 4:00 p.m. this afternoon and there would be a humanitarian corridor. there would be government buses an assigned route, people could get into private cars. the mayor of mariupol was imploring citizens if you get in private cars, take friends and neighbors and other people, make sure that no one is left behind. well, alex, 90 minutes later it turned out from the city of mariupol city council they announced that the russian aggression had not stopped. there was no cease fire, it was not safe to leave their houses and they advised all citizens of mariupol to get back inside,
so there is a real expectation that perhaps that red cross convoy will not make it to mariupol. having said all of that, there are areas in the russian controlled south where there are still a lot of refugees and where the red cross and those government buses should be able to get to so at points throughout the day today, there are towns along the coast, berdyansk is one town in particular, where those vehicles, those buses, should be accepting refugees, some of whom have escaped from mariupol and are coming here to this reception centre in zaporizhzhia. we do not know what the final situation will be, but this is not the first attempt to establish a humanitarian corridor into and out of mariupol. every time it has been tried in the past, the ceasefire or the agreement to stop firing has collapsed and vehicles have been attacked on the roads around mariupol, so it has proved far too dangerous in the past and it might prove to be the case again today. i think as long as the fight
