The history of CF Sherway Gardens in Toronto
One of Toronto s oldest malls, Sherway Gardens, celebrates 50 years this year.
Sherway Gardens, located in Etobicoke, was built just one year after the city s oldest multi-level mall, the CF Fairview Mall.
The land Sherway Gardens now occupies was once a farm, owned by Sheridan Nurseries since 1938, according to CF Sherway Gardens. The property was sold to Sherway Centre Limited in 1964.

Plans for the mall were in the works since the 1960s and the mall finally opened its doors on February 24, 1971.
It was originally an S-shape layout at 850,000 square feet with 127 stores. In 1975 it changed to a figure-eight design to add 75 new retail spaces. The mall is now 1,280,000 square feet.
