Gotabaya Rajapaksa will return to Sri Lanka on August 24, his nephew Udayanga Weeratunga said on Wednesday, over a month after the former president fled the country.
Sri Lanka's ousted president Gotabaya Rajapaksa left Singapore for Thailand after his short-term visit pass expired on Thursday, according to a media report.
The Sri Lanka government has requested Singapore authorities to allow former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to stay in the country for another 14 days, local media reported on Saturday citing sources.
Gotabaya, who is currently in Singapore after fleeing his country in the face of public revolt against his government over mismanaging the economy, served as the defence secretary during his elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa’s tenure as president from 2005 to 2014.
