38% got moderna. and 8% got johnson & johnson. so here s the bottom line for people who are vaccinated. there is an excellent chance no matter what vaccine you got that you will be told to get a booster sometime in the coupling months. we don t know exactly when, but it really is very, very likely that you will be getting a booster sometime in the coming months. the concern here is really for the folks who are unvaccinated. the concern is that all this back and forth over boosters is going to make this group even more mistrustful of the government. these are folk who s are not listening to health authorities. they re not getting vaccinated, and the concern is this could make it worse. let s take a look at this number. more than 1 in 4 eligible americans have not gotten even a single shot of the covid-19 vaccine. again, the concern is that this back and forth will make them even more reluctant to get a vaccine. the concern here is that the biden administration needs to work on its messa
september 20th. now a white house source tells cnn the initial rollout might be limited to pfizer since there isn t enough data yet on moderna or johnson & johnson. however, on wednesday, moderna said it has begun submitting booster data to the fda. cnn s senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen explains what this means and why. reporter: several weeks ago when the biden administration announced that there would be a booster rollout starting september 20th for the covid-19 vaccines, that left many people scratching their head. you can t have a booster rollout until the fda and the cdc review the data and weigh in. and that has not happened. there have been no announcements for any of the three covid-19 vaccines. so here s the issue it is possible that pfizer could have a booster rollout starting the week of september 20th, and here s why they ve submitted their data, they have a date, september 17th, to speak to the
time that too will occur, which has really prompted this move to try and boost or, as dr. fauci said, administer a third shot to most of the country. the problem is that most of the data comes out of israel. we don t have any of this data in the united states, so we re relying on the israeli data, and the new york times has reported that the fda is still waiting to get some of the raw data from israel. so that s number one. the second problem is that most of the data is with the pfizer vaccine, but yet, about half the country has received either the moderna vaccine and about 15% of the country has received the j&j vaccine where there is the least amount of data in terms of both waning efficacy or need for a booster. but yet, there was a joint statement made earlier in august from the cdc director, rochelle walensky, and the acting fda
clearly most people have gotten that, 54% of americans. 38% of americans who are vaccinated got moderna and only 8% have gotten johnson & johnson. so the question golf becomes ev pfizer looks good to start rolling out third doses, what about people who got moderna and j&j? that s a huge chunk of people, what about them? it sounds like what we re hearing is some folks within the biden administration are saying hold on, maybe we need to pull the reins on this. this has been so confusing, though. what does it say about the messaging? it was just yesterday that dr. fauci was talking about basically, look, it seems like now is the time for boosters. it s not great. messaging has been so crucial in this entire vaccine endeavor, with such a huge chunk of americans saying no to the vaccine because they have heard misinformation. messaging has been crucial. it is not great that there is
had been vaccinated five to six months ago. and this comes out of really robust data come out of israel. the problem is that we have a very professional group of people in the fda and the cdc who can t be rushed. now, some people might say that they take too much time, but there is a process here to ensure that the vaccine boost, first of all, is needed, and secondly that it is, you know, effective and maybe most importantly safe, and this process has to be respected, and the people who do this, you know, have been, you know, with the fda for sometimes decades. so and that process looks like it was skirted. all right, we ll see when we get that data from moderna, but it looks like they have enough to move forward for certain people who have the pfizer vaccine. dr. jonathan reiner, thank you for helping us understand that. thanks, doc. my pleasure, thanks. senator joe manchin is getting pushback from his own
