Gordon Murray’s McLaren F1 sports car is one of those definitive automotive legends that turned so unique even its parents have trouble relating to. As such, do we need to wonder why McLaren created not one, but two spiritual successors?
Murray s team released a video on Wednesday showing the Cosworth-designed 12-cylinder simulating a lap of Circuit de la Sarthe, the French race track where the 24 Hours of Le Mans happens each year. Using an engine dyno, the engineering team is able to spin the engine accordingly based on the track s layout, simulating downshifts for corners and flat-out top-gear running for long straightaways. We re even given a map to understand where on the track the car would be based on which gear it s in and how many rpm the engine is spinning.
Since we re not shown any concrete data, it s not clear how much power or torque the engine is making in its current configuration it s officially rated for 654 hp and 344 lb-ft of torque in the car, according to Murray. What this dyno test does tell us, though, is that this will be one of the greatest-sounding road cars ever. We can t wait to hear one in person.
