Thank you for having me. Withdelighted to be here the emerging civil war. Lets talk about Horseshoe Ridge. Let me tell you that its not a horseshoe shaped nor a ridge. More on that later. In september 1863, the union army of a cumberland and Confederate Army of tennessee came together in north georgia and thought the threeday battle. The secondlargest battle of the civil war, 130,000 men. Approximately 340,000 casualties Confederate Army of tennessee out of that. One of the things i found while researching this is that everybody has a Different Number for the casualties. As noted, it is i a confusing battle. I will give you a brief sketch of the first two days of the battle. September 18, 1863, largely a recovering force action. Thank you, derek. Youre defining that. Once a year, we take the vessel out in into the gulf of mexico for a series of day sails and our volunteers end up learning how to sail the ship on a real onetoone basis. Juneteenth is a celebration of the abolition of slavery in texas on june 19, 1865. In galveston, the end of slavery was announced by Union General gordon granger. You had europeans, mainly germans coming into the port of galveston and as a group settling a different parts of the state of texas. If you had been here in the 1850s german was the most common language spoken in galveston. On the streets, that is what people were talking in. We have a number of groups you can see in galveston today if you go to the garden, you can see what became the center for german entertainment and social life. You can go to st. Joseph church the first German Catholic Church in texas. You can see where they worshiped and where they were educated and how they spent their lives in galveston. But the height of immigration with the late 19th century and early 20th. And it continued up to 1954 when it was no longer a point of interest for immigrants. But the story of that is the backandforth between the state of texas managing immigration and eventually the federal government doing immigration. But it became a place where there want they wanted to push immigrants away
The mensa patient proclamation was the emancipation proclamation was signed into law of 1862 to go into effect january 1, 1863 but the words and the enforcement of the emancipation proclamation did not go into effect here in the south until 2. 5 years after the effective date. Africanamerican slaves could not read. It was against the law for them to be able to read so i dont think they knew about it. The union troops arrived in galveston on june the 18th, 1865. There was 2000 union soldiers. Some of the slaves, one heard they were free, were jubilant and others were depressed because they had never been on their own. They did not have a place to go. They did not have any money to purchase anything. A lot of the slaves stayed at the First Baptist church which was established in 1840. Where we are at is ashton villa which was the first brick mansion constructed on galveston island. It was constructed in 1859. This place also served as the residence for the Confederate Army and later Gord
