Gammack: The good, old days are alive and well at the University of Okoboji
Des Moines Register
Milford, Iowa Milford (pop. 3,004) is home to the University of Okoboji, the Tooth Fairy of higher education.
While the smell of piles of fallen leaves reminds us of going back to school, it is the blooms of lilac and peony that signal a countdown to Memorial Day Weekend. And that s when activities start for the University of Okoboji. It s a school where we can attend year after year and never have to graduate.
The founders of this university are Emil and Herman Richter, brothers who run The Three Sons clothing store in the Iowa Great Lakes area. It s family-owned, with each member having an important role. In the 1960s, they created and then affixed a University of Okoboji logo on clothing just for fun. Customers bought them like hungry Okoboji Walleyes, hook-line-sinker. So the University of Okoboji logo is now on hats, drinking glasses, sweatshirts, blankets, etc.
