BMA and BHP argue against CQ miners $1 3m lawsuit

Ex-miner sues major coal company over black lung diagnosis

Premium Content Subscriber only A 71-year-old Moranbah man has filed a $1.3m workplace injury lawsuit against a major coal mine company because he contracted black lung disease. Bernard Bell claims he has a permanent disability, coughs regularly, suffers shortness of breath and wheezing. Mr Bell, through Mackay company, Macrossan and Amiet Solicitors, is suing BHP Coal for $1,323.454.12. Court documents were filed at Rockhampton Supreme Court in February. According to the documents, Mr Bell was employed at BHP s Goonyella Riverside Mine between 2005 and 2007 as a trades assistant, electrician and fitter. Mr Bell claims he was exposed to an unacceptable and unsafe level of respirable dust at the Shecon Operation Area at the open cut mine.

BHP gives major update on mine automation rollout in CQ

Premium Content Subscriber only A fleet of autonomous trucks have started operating at a second BHP mine site in Central Queensland, with the mining giant eyeing a completion of the rollout in the near future. In its half year financial update for the period ending December 31 2020, BHP said its driverless truck rollout at both Goonyella Riverside mine and Daunia mine were on track. At the Goonyella Riverside mine in Queensland, the first coal site to implement autonomous haul trucks, the deployment of 86 autonomous trucks continues in line with the plan and is expected to be completed early in the 2022 calendar year, on schedule and budget, the company said.
