GU Visiting Writers Series: Jeff Rutherford For the next installment of Gonzaga’s Visiting Writers Series, one of its own is returning home. Filmmaker and writer Jeff Rutherford — class of 2014 and a former Inlander editorial intern! — returns to campus for a screening of his debut feature film, A Perfect Day for Caribou. Rutherford, also a graduate of New York University’s film school, is a screenwriter, director and producer, and has made over a dozen short films and music videos since graduating from GU. A Perfect Day for Caribou was shot in black and white and follows an estranged father and son wandering the wilds over the course of a single day. Filmed on the stark, rolling hills of Central Oregon, it was the only American film accepted into the 75th Locarno Film Festival and won “Best Narrative Feature” at the 2023 Brussels Independent Film Festival.
Covenant of the Salmon People It’s no secret that one of Spokane’s historically largest populations barely lives here anymore. Salmon, at one point numbering in the millions, were pushed out in droves with no way to return after the construction of dams along rivers connecting to the Spokane. This story is unfortunately the same for many other parts of the Pacific Northwest, impacting all who live there, but particularly those of native peoples. The documentary Covenant of the Salmon People outlines the ancient covenant that exists between the Nez Perce Tribe and Chinook salmon and the challenges to save wild salmon from extinction due to damming and climate change impacts. Gonzaga’s Institute for Climate, Water, and the Environment is hosting a free screening of the film for viewers to learn more about the fight to save a vital Northwest species.
