SPOKANE, Wash. Joel Ayayi was projected to be a late first round or early second round pick in the NBA draft Thursday, but instead he doesn’t hear his name called.
Immediately following the draft it was reported that Ayayi has signed a two-way deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Joel Ayayi might be the most improved player in the history of Gonzaga basketball as he struggled to find consistent playing time just a couple seasons ago, and turned himself into a player many believed would be an NBA draftee.
Ayayi has proven to be a do-everything player in his time in Spokane, last year he averaged 12 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.

After the Los Angeles Lakers dealt away their only draft pick as part of the trade to acquire Russell Westbrook, it became doubtful that the team would be involved in the 2021 NBA Draft. There was an outside chance that the Lakers could trade back in the draft, perhaps in the second round, but ultimately the team decided against it.
But once the draft ended, the Lakers immediately went to work in bringing on some young players who the team could develop. The Lakers have done well with their two-way contracts previously, most notably Alex Caruso becoming a legit rotation player. In addition, both Devontae Cacok and Kostas Antetokounmpo were beloved by their Lakers teammates.

The Los Angeles Lakers went right to work following the conclusion of the 2021 NBA Draft in scooping up some of the best undrafted players available. Following the team’s acquisition of Russell Westbrook, the Lakers were left with no draft picks and chose not to trade into the second round, but they may have added some players just as good, if not better than many of those selected.
The first player the Lakers signed to a two-way deal was Gonzaga’s Joel Ayayi, an ideal 3-and-D wing. But the Lakers wanted some variety in their two-way players, and their second signee is a much different, though no less intriguing prospect.
