KMT paints referendums as vote on livelihood issues

December’s referendums are a vote on livelihood issues, not a squabble between political parties, Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) said yesterday. The KMT-endorsed propositions are to ban imports of pork containing the leanness-enhancing additive ractopamine and to hold referendums alongside national elections, Chu said at a lecture hosted by the KMT-affiliated Institute of Revolutionary Practice in Yunlin. The poll found that KMT support stood at 16.2 percent, compared with 17.6 percent for the TPP, impressive for a party only launched in August 2019. KMT support has hovered at about 20 percent for the past five years and, according to a previous poll conducted by the foundation, it stood at 18.9 percent, the lowest since June 2016, in July this year, when the TPP was already nipping at its heels with 15.6 percent.
