The role of education inspectors was on a high pedestal in the education system in the country as it helped in keeping teachers on their toes, and the teachers their pupils, but today, that quality control measure is downplayed.
While the federal and some state governments still send quality assurance inspectors to public schools, others have completely jettisoned them.
“As a secondary school student then, I remember we had supervisors who regularly came to our classes, and it was usually a tense moment for most of the teachers,” a postgraduate student of the University of Abuja, Oyin Hyacinth, said.
She said her teachers always worked hard to complete the syllabus before examination and even have time for revision for students.

The Federal Government on Wednesday met with top officials of the Poultry Farmers’ Association of Nigeria as part of efforts to stop the spread of bird flu, which had spread to seven states.
The Director-General of PAN, Onallo Akpa, disclosed this in an interview with one of our correspondents as state governments also began moves to stop the spread of the virus.
For example, the Kano State Government said it had killed 223,695 birds, while the Niger State Government stated that the disease had killed 53,000 birds.
In Plateau State, the virus has killed 100,00 birds and in Gombe State, no fewer than 14,800 birds have contracted the disease.

No fewer than 1,006 junior secondary school three students are to repeat the class for failing to pass a promotional assessment test in to senior secondary school one.
37,774 students took the test,
the Punch learnt.
Investigation conducted by our correspondent revealed that the 1,006 were expected to go through the process the next academic year.
An official of Gombe State Ministry of Education, who pleaded anonymity, said ,the governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, had made it known that there was no room for automatic promotion, adding that the only caveat was for the candidates to pass the assessment and get government’s sponsorship.
