The Central Epidemic Command Center yesterday reported the first death in Taiwan from the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, as well as 40 imported and five locally transmitted cases.
Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the center, said the deceased is a Taiwanese in her 80s, who was listed as a contact of a cluster infection at the Golden Voice Social Club in Taoyuan.
The woman was a dialysis patient who had taken a taxi driven by a member of the social club, Chen said.

The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) yesterday reported 66 confirmed cases of COVID-19, of which 49 are imported and 17 local infections.
Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the center, said the 49 included 17 inbound travelers on long-haul flights who were tested upon arrival at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport on Monday, and 32 travelers who were tested during quarantine.
The 17 local cases included four members of a family in Hsinchu City, Chen said.

The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) yesterday reported 11 new local COVID-19 infections, all linked to cases recorded in Taoyuan since Monday last week, and 57 imported cases.
The domestic cases are eight males and three females, with two of them children under the age of five, the CECC said.
Two involved a man and his mother, who is friends with a member of the Golden Voice Social Club in Taoyuan who tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday last week, it said.
