The probe “could lead to a software recall or more for Tesla, and a broader crackdown on automakers that are selling increasingly sophisticated systems, or who aim to offer driverless cars eventually.”

Tesla’s Autopilot mode is very impressive for tech that is commercially available, but most of us would not call Tesla’s cars fully self-driving just yet. But not all of Tesla’s owners agree, because according to a statement by the California Highway Patrol, they have arrested a 25-year old man for riding in the backseat of his Tesla while the driver’s seat was empty. He was very trusting with his life. And the lives of others.
According to the CHP’s statement, “On May 10 at approximately 6:34 p.m., the CHP’s Golden Gate Division Communications Center received multiple 9-1-1 calls regarding an individual seated in the backseat of a Tesla Model 3 without anyone seated in the driver’s seat. The vehicle was reported to be traveling eastbound on I-80 across the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge toward the city of Oakland.”

Multiple 911 calls alert CHP to man in car without a driver
OAKLAND (CBS SF) The California Highway Patrol (CHP) on Tuesday announced the weekend arrest of the man spotted riding across the Bay Bridge in the back seat of a Tesla Model 3 operating on “Autopilot” mode with no one in the driver’s seat.
The California Highway Patrol said officers arrested 25-year-old Param Sharma on Sunday evening for reckless driving of a Tesla while in the backseat on Interstate 80 in the Bay Area. Authorities said Sharma was arrested without incident and booked into Santa Rita Jail on two counts of reckless driving and disobeying a peace officer.

The man popped up on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and since his behavior merited it, he was quickly featured on Reddit as well, but no on the kind of subreddits you d want to have your name associated with. What the man later identified as Param Sharma did was travel in his Tesla Model 3 electric sedan while lounging in the backseat, sometimes using his feet to provide input to the steering wheel, sometimes just enjoying the passing scenery without even bothering to do that.
His antics didn t go unnoticed by the people sharing the road with him, and if Tesla refuses to crack down on this kind of behavior more violently, then the public had to take matters into their own hands. So, presumably infuriated by Sharma s recklessness and rightfully fearing for their wellbeing and that of others, drivers started alerting the police.
