Racing fans packed the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds and its grandstands full Wednesday for day one of the four-day 69th Gold Cup Race of Champions. With the Las Vegas theme in 2023, fans decorated their trailers with signs like "Welcome to Gold Cup", referring to the infamous "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign, as well as many other exuberant signs and decorations. Lowell Moural Sr. was a racing legend in Northern California. Moural was a Chico High School graduate who, after a decorated racing career on motorbikes, was the owner of Cycleland Speedway in Oroville, the head of track preparation at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico and a father figure to many young racers who grew up racing at Cycleland Speedway in Moural's backyard. Moural, 72, passed away August 9.
