On an early October day in 1964 with the Yankees and Cardinals tied 1-1 midway through Game 3 of the World Series my mom sent me to Peter Reeves on 231st Street to get a jar of mayonnaise so she could make me a tuna fish sandwich.
Merchants of the five West 231st Street businesses destroyed in a fire last December are left devastated as demolition has further erased what once stood.
As demolition began last week at the five Kingsbridge businesses ravaged by a fire in December, business owners were waiting for the cause of the fire to be determined so they can proceed with insurance claims.

Whatever sad adjectives accompany this story of loss, it is heartening to know that the Kingsbridge/231st Street shopping district will likely rebuild and renew itself. Why? Because it happened before at the same location.
A handful of Kingsbridge merchants are forced to start anew this holiday season, after a fire broke out in the early morning of Dec. 13, engulfing a handful of businesses and leaving those nearby with flooded basements.
