[ bleep ]. nearly a year after ukrainian guard on snake island uttered that now defiant phrase, the island remains firmly in ukrainian hands. in an exclusive, will ripley and his crew are the first journalists to make the perilous trip to that island, littered with land mines and russian wreckage. reporter: as the saying goes, whoever controls snake island controls the black sea. the safest way to get there, the ukrainian military s inflatable speed boat, with seating for six. it s small enough to stay out of sight. we are really getting tossed around out here, but we need to take a small boat, because we
russian forces withdraw from this same island. ukraine is accusing russia of dropping phosphorous bonds on the island. a u.s. defense official said that ukraine is having, quote, a good deal of success with an advanced rocket system used to target russian command posts. cnn correspondent scott mclain joins us live from kyiv. and scott, this island, snake island, it has strategic importance but it also has symbolic importance because this is at the beginning of war, of the war where those ukrainian soldiers said russia warship, go f yourself. so what more could you tell us about what has been happening there? reporter: yeah, symbolic, economic, military importance, this little outcropping in black sea certainly played a role in this war. the ukrainians say they drove the russians off the island two days ago after a week s long bombing campaign but the
warship, go f yourself. now sources are telling cnn when ukraine successfully targeted the ship on april 14th, they had some help from the u.s. as they spotted a russian warship in the black sea, they called the american contacts to con confirm. the u.s. said it was and give them intel about the location. the sources say it s not clear whether the u.s. knew ukraine would strike the ship and the u.s. was not involved in that decision. that s happening as president zelenskyy says russian shelling of the steel plant is not stostop i ing. some 200 desperate civilians sheltering there while food and water running out. a new evacuation convoy they hope can reach the plapt in the morning. ukrainian forces inside the plant singing a battle hymn.
