Coronavirus: Carmarthenshire s emergency measures at Newcastle Emlyn s Glyn Nest care home

IT was around lunchtime on Christmas Eve when staff at Carmarthenshire County Council realised that a care home at Newcastle Emlyn was in dire straits. Glyn Nest residential home simply didn’t have enough staff to cover the rota that evening or Christmas Day. “The entire management team and most of the staff had tested positive (for coronavirus),” said Jake Morgan, the council’s director of communities. “What you effectively have is nobody to run the care home.” The council had been in regular touch with the home, which has space for up to 30 residents, in the run-up to Christmas.

Hywel Dda health board said it was following government guidance. Ms Morgan said her grandfather, who has dementia, has been kept in his room at Glyn Nest care home, Newcastle Emlyn, since 20 December, because of the Covid problem.
