Final two candidates make their cases to become Pittsfield superintendent

PITTSFIELD — On Tuesday evening, two educators pitched themselves as the best choice for superintendent of Pittsfield Public Schools, in the final night of interviews a day before the School Committee makes its decision. Arthur Unobskey, superintendent of Wayland Public Schools, and Marisa Mendonsa, principal of Mohawk Trail Regional High School in Buckland, outlined their backgrounds and educational philosophies before the seven-member School Committee. Unobskey, also a former principal in Boston Public Schools, and English language coordinator and assistant superintendent in Gloucester Public Schools, called Pittsfield a “dynamic city that has not only tremendous assets, [but also] tremendous potential for growth and a tremendous dedication to the children.”

PITTSFIELD, Mass. The Pittsfield School Committee interviewed four finalists on Monday and Tuesday evenings in the search for the district s new superintendent.  Each of the applicants has a history of more than 24 years in education and evinced a desire to embrace the city s diverse range of youth and young adults. The committee will deliberate on the appointment of the next superintendent at its regular meeting Wednesday, April 14. Former Superintendent Jason McCandless left last August for the Mount Greylock Regional School District, and former Deputy Superintendent Joseph Curtis was selected as interim superintendent. A 23-member Superintendent Search Committee was formed in November 2020 and had its first meeting in December with the hope to have a new superintendent by July 1, 2021.

PITTSFIELD — During the thick of a coronavirus pandemic that has roiled public school education everywhere, school officials here are facing a high-stakes decision — who to hire as the next superintendent of Pittsfield Public Schools. That decision is expected to come Wednesday, when the seven-member Pittsfield School Committee casts its vote from a field of four finalist candidates, according to Chairperson Katherine Yon. “We need someone on board who can lead us through the pandemic, who understands the system well enough to be able to accommodate for all the changes that we have to make to make sure everybody stays safe and healthy while learning in the best way possible,” Yon told The Eagle.

Sawyer Free Library, Wellspring launch Gloucester Connection website

Community Content Sawyer Free Library and Wellspring House have announced the launch of the Gloucester Connection website. This multi-lingual website, http://gloucesterconnection.org, connects the greater community to Gloucester s social services for education, health care, housing and more. The new free-to-use web platform is a centralized online directory and calendar that consolidates information from local organizations, services, and events for residents, visitors and service providers, prioritizing accessibility by making it available in over 100 world languages.  Recognizing the need to streamline access to critical local resources, the Sawyer Free Library and Wellspring House, with contributions from Action Inc., Gloucester Housing Authority and Gloucester Public Schools, came together to align their efforts and created the Gloucester Connection. Social Capital Inc. was hired to develop the site.
