Gloriavale Leavers Support Trust manager Liz Gregory said on Thursday she had received a commitment from the Royal Commission into abuse and faith-based care that it was sending lawyers to Canterbury in April to talk to those who had left Gloriavale. Confirmation of the visit to Canterbury – where many of those who left the West Coast Christian community are now based – comes as the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care speeds up its report on redress by two years.

Gloriavale Christian Community on the West Coast has been investigated by police after allegations of child sex abuse. A 20-year-old man was charged in September with doing an indecent act on three boys aged between 12 and 16 at Gloriavale. The charges are representative, meaning multiple offences of the same type are alleged to have been committed in similar circumstances. Another man, who also has name suppression, has appeared in court on child abuse charges, and at least one boy from the community has appeared in the Youth Court at Greymouth. Police prosecutor Mathew Wood asked the Greymouth District Court in September to suppress all details about the 20-year-old.
