Lets start with the Military Coup in myanmar. Police have filed several charges against the elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. She hasnt been seen since her arrest on monday and remains in custody. The charges she faces are unexpected. First, shes charged with breaching the countrys strict import and export laws. Shes also accused of possessing Unlawful Communications devices, and we know that is related to six walky talkies used by her Security Guards and which the Authorities Say were found in Aung San Suu Kyis residence. Heres our South East Asia correspondentjonathan head. Any Walkie Talkies in her home would have been used by Security Guards. Everyone will know that is a device. Its a way of trying to neutralise. Just think about this. The military lots there too because she has one every election by really significant margins. If the military is to fulfil its promise on holding another election, it has to find a way to get out of the election. Thats what they will use to do that. A
Well hear from the former Prime Minister matteo renzi, whos told me why he forced the current crisis. Politics means make choice. The burnley manager tells us what we are really missing in this pandemic is a game of looky likey. Hello. Im Laura Trevelyan in new york. Christian fraser is in london. There was encouraging news for britains government today. First came a preliminary report that the astrazeneca vaccine does reduce transmission of the virus by two thirds. Until now, there had been no real data on that. And the very same study found that delivering a second dose after 12 weeks, rather than three, made the vaccine more effective. The report hasnt been Peer Reviewed but seems to vindicate the uk governments strategy. Progress so much quicker. Alice was nine when she first had a go and now she has qualified at 13, on a par with veteran jo mitchell who is in her 805. It can be a lifelong hobby. Its a lovely sound, its always different, like it sounds softer in here and it sounds a lot louder outside. Bells ring. It feels rather chilly, particularly where you are exposed to the breeze. There are changes to come this week. I cant promise we will lose all the cloud, we will see some sunshine and some rain, but it will feel milder. This is the Satellite Picture and you can see the extent of the cloud today. Some bright parts in wales and the south west, our best chance for the sunshine through the afternoon. A few breaks in the cloud elsewhere, but rain grazing Northern Ireland and into Western Parts of scotland and spots of rain and drizzle elsewhere. In North East Scotland where you are exposed to an easterly breeze, just five to 7 degrees. In the South West Of England highs of 12. This evening and ove
We begin in cyprus, where a Spanish Charity ship carrying vital supplies is preparing to set sail for gaza, along a new maritime aid corridor. The vessel operated by The Open Arms Charity has been repositioning itself in the harbour in larnaca, while another, smaller boat, towed a Barge Carrying Aid Supplies out onto the water. Over the last two days, its been loaded with around two hundred tonnes of food and medical supplies. The aid will be overseen by the world central kitchen organisation. But without a working port, its not clear yet where the ship will actually dock, or how its cargo will be distributed inside gaza. Meanwhile, talks involving mediators, aimed at establishing a pause in the fighting before the start of the muslim holy month of ramadan, have so far failed to reach a deal. Both israel and hamas are accusing the other of preventing any progress. Now, the stakes are high. The Hamas Run Health Ministry says more than 31,000 palestinians have now been killed since israe
